Deacon William E. Simmons

It is with deep respect and a profound sense of loss that we mourn the passing of Deacon William E. Simmons, affectionately known as "Peter" or "Pete," who transitioned to eternal rest on June 21, 2026, at the age of 87 in the comfort of his home with his beloved family at his side. Born on March 27, 1939, in the Talladega, Alabama, William E. Simmons was the cherished son of William C. and Rosa Mae Taylor Simmons. Throughout his remarkable journey, he touched the hearts of many and left a legacy woven with love and devotion. William's faith was the cornerstone of his life. He dedicated himself to serving at Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church as a deacon, choir member, and groundskeeper, cultivating a nurturing community that flourished under his tender care. His commitment to his church and family exemplified a life devoted to God and fellowship, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Educated within the supportive environment of the Talladega City School System, Deacon Simmons laid a foundation of hard work early in life, beginning his career as a delivery driver at J.D. Connor Furniture Company. He later embarked on a fulfilling path in healthcare as a Certified Nursing Assistant, dedicating many years of service at Citizen's Baptist Medical Center and ABC Home Health. His gentle spirit and nurturing touch earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and patients alike. On July 15, 1959, Deacon Simmons found his soulmate, the former Ms. Jeanette Pilot. Their love story blossomed over 67 beautiful years, during which they celebrated the joys of parenthood with four devoted children. Deacon Simmon's love for his family was immeasurable, encompassing a bond built on unconditional support and firm affection. Beyond his familial commitments, Deacon Simmons enjoyed the beauty of nature. An avid outdoorsman, he cherished moments by the riverside, casting his line in search of "the big catch." His passion for gardening was profound; he delighted in nurturing his vegetables and sharing his bountiful harvest with friends and family. A true craftsperson, he could mend anything, exemplifying the spirit of a handyman whose talents knew no bounds. William now joins his beloved parents, William and Rosa Simmons, his daughter, Helen Berette Simmons, great-granddaughter, Ny'Asia Smoot, great-great grandson, Karsen Johnson, siblings, Joe Charles Simmons, Jerry Simmons, Bobby Gene Simmons, Lillie Stockdale, Elizabeth Funderburg, and Georgia Ann Whitson in the heavenly realm. He leaves behind a loving and devoted wife, Jeanette P. Simmons; son, Bruce Edward Simmons; two daughters, Brenda Diane Lee and Cynthia Simmons Boyce; brothers, Elijah (Myrtis) Simmons and Lawrence (Karolyn) Simmons; sisters, Mary Lynch, Thelma (John) Jackson, Barbara (Marvin) Draper, and Louise (Jeff) Hawkins; six grandchildren, Quinton Smoot, Pastor Lee Roy (Rikkila) Smoot, Lamarcus Smoot, Charles Xavier Glendan Boyce, Corey Langston Boyce, and Brandi Nicole (Dave Suttle) Smoot; one adopted granddaughter, Stephanie Garrett; eleven great-grandchildren, Tanaia Jones, Nykaha Turner, Ka'mya Davis, America Davis, Jermeria Davis, Jabari Smoot, Kagan Smoot, Kaori Smoot, Ahmari Bridges, Kameron Stockdale, and Quinton Jedidiah Smoot; three great-great grandsons, Kingston Warick, Kyr'ree Spencer and Sevyen Kelly; one adopted great-great grandson, Brylen Swain; brother-in-law, Tommie Whitson; along with a host of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever remember him. As we come together to honor and remember a life filled with purpose, passion, and unwavering devotion, let us celebrate the light that was Deacon William E. Simmons. His memory shall endure, a beacon of love and inspiration for generations to come. In our hearts, he will remain-forever a part of us, enlightening our lives with the essence of his spirit.
