Velma P. Gilbert

Velma P. Gilbert began her earthly journey on April 7, 1947, in Anniston, Alabama, to the parentage of Daniel Lee and Ulma Foster. Velma's spiritual journey began when she confessed her love for Christ at an early age. She united with New Prospect Baptist Church where she faithfully served on several circles and eagerly participated in the annual Black History Program. She was a vibrant presence at church and could often be found clapping to the uplifting music and celebrating the joy of fellowship. Velma received her formal education in Calhoun County, graduating from Calhoun County Training School. She made a significant impact during her years working as an interviewer for the Alabama State Unemployment Claims Office, always going above and beyond to uplift those around her. Her passion for community outreach extended well beyond her professional life; she was an advocate for women furthering their education and spent countless hours caring for the elderly. For over 38 years, Velma proudly served as the president of Gaines Cemetery, ensuring that the resting place for so many was maintained with love and respect. In 1965, Velma married the love of her life, L. J. Gilbert, with whom she shared a beautiful life until his passing in 2011. Together, they raised three wonderful children. She enjoyed spending time in the kitchen cooking delicious meals and perfecting her famous pecan pies. A true modern-day Fred Sanford, she found immense joy in hunting for antiques and going to yard sales. Velma also enjoyed gardening, quilting, and crocheting. On Sunday, December 14, 2025, at the age of 78, Velma P. Gilbert entered eternal rest and journeyed to her heavenly home. She was preceded in death by her husband, L. J. Gilbert; parents, Daniel Lee and Ulma Foster; granddaughter, Alanna Gilbert; brothers, James Borders, Billy Lee, and Herbert Graham; special brothers, James Lee and Norris "Poon" Lee; brothers-in-law, Edward (Doris) Gilbert and Earl (Patsy) Gilbert; sisters-in-law, Nettie Gilbert and Bernice Gilbert; and her mother and father-in-law, Jim and Christine Gilbert. Memories of Velma will forever be treasured in the hearts of her children, LaVonda Gilbert, Gerald Gilbert, and Felicia Gilbert; grandchildren, Devakius Gilbert, Teyhraun Westbrooks, Gerryka Gilbert, Bretia Gilbert, Tamisha Gilbert, Keionna Gilbert, Ay'Kalyn Gilbert, Terrionna Gilbert, Isaiah Gilbert, and Ariya Gilbert; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth (Owens) Gilbert; brothers, Carlos Woodard and Daniel Lee; uncle, Alfred Caver, Sr.; special sons, Carlton Caver and Solomon Gilbert, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. May we forever hold Velma's memories close to our hearts and celebrate her legacy of love, service, and unwavering faith.
