Mattie Taylor

Born on January 22, 1940, in Talladega, Alabama, Mrs. Mattie "Vera Lee" Curry Taylor was the cherished daughter of Otis Curry and Mary Alice Garrett Curry. Mother Taylor was united in marriage to John E. Taylor, with whom she shared the joy of raising nine beloved children. Her family was her world, and she poured her heart into nurturing her children and grandchildren. Known affectionately as "Mama" to all who were blessed to know her, she opened her home and heart to anyone in need, embodying genuine kindness and compassion. A devoted Christian, Mother Taylor accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. She served faithfully as a doorkeeper of the Lord and as president of the usher board before continuing her journey of faith at Freedom Holy Ghost Headquarters and later as the esteemed "Mother" of Righteous in Truth Ministries. Her love for God shone brightly in all she did, from her spirited singing, which was a gift from God to her firm devotion to prayer and praise. She was educated in the Talladega County School System while attending Lane Chapel School. Once completing her education, Mother Taylor became a domestic engineer taking care of her children giving them all the love a mother could give. In her leisure time, Mother Taylor found joy in working on crossword puzzles, a testament to her sharp mind, and creating delightful soul food meals that brought family and friends together. Her nurturing spirit and strong faith will be deeply missed but warmly remembered by all who had the privilege of crossing her path. On Friday evening, December 13, 2024, while under the care of Affinity Hospice and Brookwood Medical Center, God saw Mother Mattie "Vera Lee" Curry Taylor was getting tired and said come on home my child and take your rest. The Lord placed a clarion call to harken his angel and heard his servants cry "slow down your chariots at the Jordan River and do not pass her by. She has done the work of my plans and need to take her rest, for I know you loved her, but I loved her best." Mother Taylor rejoined the hands of those who preceded her in death including her parents, Otis and Mary Curry, siblings, Airlene Jackson, Essie Looney, Reddie James Curry, Carson Curry, and Chrissy Curry, and granddaughter, Latricia Mon'ae Cook. Mother Taylor leaves behind a legacy of love and faith through her four loving sons, Cheyenne (Brenda) Curry, Andrew (Yolanda) Curry, Max (Laquita) Curry, and Howard Shears, all of Talladega; five beloved daughters, Deborah (John) McGowan of Sylacauga, Inez (Michael) Cook, and Carolyn (William) Estelle of Talladega, Annie (Demetrius) Roston in Childersburg, and Doris Shears (Kenneth) Turner of Talladega; sister-in-law, Shirley Curry of Talladega and Barbara Curry of Dayton, Ohio; prayer partners, Patsy Curry and Vanessa Cross; twenty-seven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. In this time of sorrow, let us come together to celebrate a woman whose life was a testament to love, kindness, and unwavering faith. May her memory bring us comfort as we reflect on the indelible mark she made in our lives.
