Lucy Thornton

Lucy Mae Thornton, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt, and dear friend was born on September 2, 1925, in Talladega, Alabama to the union of Roy McCluney and Annie Turner McCluney. Mrs. Thornton was a woman of grace and strength, touching the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. She derived great joy from her role as a housewife, dedicating her life to caring for her family and creating a warm and loving home. Mary found consolation and deep contentment in the simple joys of life - tending to her flowers, sitting on her porch speaking a talking with her neighbors, listening to the radio, and spending quality time with her loved ones. When it came to a good meal, it was easy for "Mu" , as she was known by her community, family, and friends, to put her culinary skills to work. Throughout her life, Mrs. Thornton remained a faithful and devoted servant of the Lord and the community. She accepted Christ at a young age while attending The Church on Railroad Avenue. Mrs. Thornton always extended a helping hand to those in need and found immense fulfillment in her 98-year journey in the Lincoln community. Despite not receiving a formal diploma, Mrs. Thornton's thirst for knowledge remained unquenchable. She valued education and encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue their dreams and aspirations. She herself was a shining example of resilience and determination. Along Mrs. Thornton's earthly journey, her enduring love and devotion to her late husband, Mr. Tommie Lee Thornton, was a testament to the extraordinary bond they shared. Together, they navigated life's challenges hand in hand, celebrating countless milestones, joys, and even sorrows throughout their many years of marriage. After 98 blessed years on the earthly journey, while in the care of Amedysis Hospice, Mrs. Lucy Thornton peacefully transitioned on April 11, 2023, surrounded by her beloved family at her home in Lincoln, Alabama. Once Mrs. Thornton answered the Master's call, she was reunited with her husband, Tommie Thornton, parents, Roy and Annie McCluney, sons, Randy Thornton and Roy Thornton, daughters, Minnie Walker and Peggy Weed, brother, Johnny (Elsie) McCluney, sister, Helen (Alphonso) Hill, and grandson, Lazarus Groce, Sr. Mrs. Lucy Thornton leaves a legacy of love and memories to forever be cherished by her loving and devoted children: two sons, Willie (Clara) McCluney and James (Kimberly) Thornton; two daughters, Tilda (Michael) Beason and Eleanor Thornton; special person whom she raised as her own, Mayor Lew Watson; special neighbors, Sidney (Mary) Fomby; two daughters-in-law, Theresia Thornton and Stephanie Thornton; two son-in-laws, Stevie Weed and Jessie Walker; two granddaughters-in-law, Kristin Poke Groce and Jacknetra Reynolds Simmons; grandchildren, Willie Glen Ragland, Christ Lane, Tamiko (Vic) Ragland, Terence (Marchelle) McCLuney, Dedrick (Zabimar) McCluney, Kenneth (Kim) Embry, Robbie (Jessie) Weathers, LaCendic 9Ken) Swain, Yakiesha Thornton, RaShaunda Thornton, KaRisa (DeMarco) Walker, Kentasia (Lawrence) Thornton, Latresa (Pastor Reginal) Chappalle, Tyrone (Keisha) Scott, Reginal (Effie) Scott, Natasha (DeVante) Roberts, Corry Hunter, Imani Afford, Devona Afford, Imayiah Glanton, Devaundria Glanton, Ken'Yasia Beason, Carlos Patton, Lashundra Patton; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. As we bid farewell to Mrs. Thornton, we celebrate a life well-lived and a remarkable legacy she leaves behind. Her unwavering faith, unconditional love, and gentle spirit will forever guide and inspire those who knew her. God in his special way, at his perfect time, picked from our midst this sweet, sweet soul and added her to his Heavenly Garden where her spirit will be at Bloom forever. May Mrs. Thornton's soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory be a blessing to us all.
