Joyce Elston

Born on July 1, 1954, in Talladega, Alabama, Joyce was the cherished daughter of Lee Curtis Truss and Gladys Beavers Truss. Her journey on this earth has left an indelible mark on the lives of those who were blessed to know her. Joyce's unwavering faith was the cornerstone of her life. She united with Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church at a young age, where she faithfully served her congregation as a testament to her devout Christian spirit. Joyce received her education in the Talladega County School System where she attended Talladega County Training School and was a proud graduate of the Lincoln High School Class of 1972. Joyce dedicated her professional career to serving her community. As a mechanic with the government and later in the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) office, she exemplified hard work and commitment, retiring to embrace her role as a devoted caregiver in the healthcare industry. Joyce was more than her accomplishments; she was a radiant beacon of joy and kindness. Known for her warm smile, she touched the hearts of many through her compassion and generosity, leaving a legacy of love in her wake. Her vibrant spirit found comfort in nurturing her beloved garden and she delighted in planting flowers wherever she could, showcasing her undeniable green thumb. Joyce also treasured her quiet moments by the riverbanks, casting her line and sharing laughter with her loved ones. Vacationing played a vital part in Joyce's life. She loved traveling with her husband and family. In her personal life, Joyce was blessed to marry her soulmate and high school sweetheart, Mr. Henry Elston, on July 24, 1972. Their nearly 53 years of marriage were filled with love, respect, and cherished memories, as they raised two wonderful children together. Joyce was a devoted mother and an adoring grandmother, relishing in the joy brought by her grandchildren and great-grandchild, and creating countless joyful moments that will forever remain in their hearts. Mrs. Joyce Elston was called to her eternal home on Sunday, April 6, 2025 while under the compassionate care of St. Vincent's East Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama with her beloved family at her side. Joyce is now reunited with her parents, Lee Curtis and Gladys Truss, brothers, Louis McCargo and Willie Lee Williams, sisters, Betty Warren, Curley Brewer, and Mary Green, brothers-in-law, George Cameron, Willie Hall, Alonzo Cochran, Jr., Frank Cunningham, Cleveland Cunningham, and Robert Elston. Joyce leaves a legacy of love and fun memories to forever be cherished by her loving and devoted husband, Henry Elston; son, Dexter (Denise) Elston; daughter, Carla (Dimitric) McCluney; grandchildren, Dr. Amaris (Cordero) Little, Morgan Elston, Madison Elston, Dominique Elston, Donovan Elston, Zion McCluney, Zavion McCluney, and Mason McCluney; great-grandson, Cairo Little; brother, Leo Truss; sisters, Marilyn Cameron, Brenda Hall, Vanessa (Kenneth) Reed, and Annie Mae Cochran; sisters-in-law, Pearline Williams, Willie Lee Vertreese, Corene (Johnnie) Jordan, and Melody Dickerson; brothers-in-law, Larry Green, Stanley (Muriel) Elston, Willie P. (Sharon) Elston, Joel Elston, and Clay Dickerson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
