J. E. Garrett, Sr.

Born on January 13, 1938, in Talladega, Alabama, J.E. Garrett Sr. was the cherished son of John L. Garrett Sr. and Hattie Mae Swain Garrett. It was in Kingston Missionary Baptist Church that J.E. found strength and solace. A dedicated member of the congregation, he faithfully served as a deacon and lent his powerful voice to the male chorus. Additionally, he was an esteemed member of Constella Lodge 246, showcasing his commitment to his faith and community. After completing his education in the Talladega County School System, J.E. embarked on a successful career in the construction industry, leaving a lasting impact on the community he served. Beyond his hard work, J.E. delighted in the simple pleasures of life. A passionate outdoorsman, he found joy in casting his fishing line and embarking on hunting adventures. In his free time, he could often be found enjoying his favorite cowboy and western shows, finding solace and entertainment in their timeless tales. Above all else, J.E. Garrett Sr. treasured his family. Spending quality time with his grandchildren brought him immeasurable happiness, and his love for them had no bounds. After being blessed to see five generation, on Friday, October 6, 2023, J.E. Garrett, Sr. peacefully transitioned from this 85-year journey to eternal rest while in the care of UAB hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Once gaining his wings, he was reunited with his beloved wife, France Pearlean Garrett, his parents John L. and Hattie Mae Garrett, Sr., three sons, J.E. Garrett Jr., Darrick Garrett, and Panard Garrett, his daughter Va'Shawnda Garrett, two grandchildren, Nakia Barclay and Donte Garrett, three brothers, John L. Garrett Jr., Mitchell Garrett, and Jeremiah Garrett, and his sister, Hannah Mae Garrett. He leaves behind a loving legacy to forever be cherished by his sons, Percy Garrett, Joe (Shirley) Garrett, Leon (Donna) Garrett, James Cedric (Teresa) Garrett, Cedric (Marquetta Huggins) Long, and Andre (Shawntay) Garrett; two daughters, Lora Jeane (James) Bivens and Lasha Baht (Uriel Ben) Israel; his brother, Richard Garrett; sisters-in-law, Linda J. Curry, Arnetta (Lee) Keith, Dessie Garrett, Inez Garrett, and Dorothy Garrett; brother-in-law, Joe B. Garrett; thirty-one grandchildren; sixty-eight great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In this time of bereavement, may we remember J.E. Garrett Sr. for his unwavering faith, his wholesome love for family, and his dedication to his community. He will forever be cherished and deeply missed.
