Bettye McCain

Bettye Embry McCain was born on February 9, 1944 in St. Clair County, Alabama to the parentage of Mr. McKinley Nobles and Mrs. Lizzie Kate Embry Chatman. She was the oldest of seven children. Bettye received her education in the St. Clair County School System, where she laid the foundation for a life marked by dedication and service. Her professional journey began at Avondale Mills, where she demonstrated unwavering commitment and integrity, later continuing her career in environmental services until her health necessitated her retirement. A devoted follower of Christ, Bettye first accepted the teachings of the Lord at Rocky Zion Baptist Church, cultivating her faith throughout her life. She later became a devoted member of Jacob's Chapel C.M.E. Church, where her love for God was palpable. As a deaconess, choir member, and secretary for announcements, as well as a dedicated worker on the hospitality and benevolent committees, Bettye's vibrant spirit and abiding faith touched the lives of countless individuals. Bettye's life was beautifully intertwined with that of her soulmate, Ocie McCain, Jr. Their union, blessed with nearly 64 years of love, gave rise to three wonderful children: Tarrence, Stacy, and Michelle. Her family was a source of endless joy and pride for her, and her nurturing spirit created a haven filled with love. She took immense pride in watching them grow and shared countless moments filled with laughter and love. A true family woman, Bettye's greatest joy was spending time with her loved ones, often gathering around the television to enjoy her favorite cowboy shows, where she embraced the spirit of adventure and solidarity that resonated with her own life. In addition to her familial devotion, Bettye was a true culinary artist, known for her exquisite meals and the warmth of her family gatherings. Her passion for gardening brought her peace, as she cultivated a stunning array of flowers, reflecting her innate grace and beauty. Indeed, Bettye exemplified what it meant to be a DIVA and a fashionista, enchanting all with her radiant charm and vibrant humor. Affectionately known as "Bettye Lou" by her family and friends, Bettye exuded glamour and grace, radiating beauty both inside and out. Bettye will be remembered not only for her remarkable spirit but also for her ability to bring laughter and joy to every gathering. Her compassionate, listening ear and nurturing heart created lasting bonds with those fortunate enough to know her, leaving a legacy of love and kindness. Beauty was her name; but shopping and dressing was her game. God saw Bettye was getting tired and said, "Come on home, my child, and take your rest." The Lord placed a clarion call to harken his angel and heard his servants cry, "Slow down your chariots at the Jordan River, and do not pass her by. She has done the work of my plans and needs to take her rest, for I know you loved her, but I loved her best." On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, while in the care of UAB St. Vincent's in Birmingham, Alabama, Bettye rejoined the hands of those who preceded her in death, including her parents, McKinley Nobles and Lizzie Kate Chatman, her son, Tarrence Ocie McCain, great-granddaughter, Estrella Selena, sister, Linda Evans, father and mother-in-law, Ocie and Leona McCain, son-in-law, John Booker, and brothers-in-law, Jerome Davis, Jerry McCain, and Charles McCain, sisters-in-law, Lois McCain, Maggie E. Banks, Francis Hargrove, and Isabella Bossie. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted husband of 63 years, Ocie McCain, Jr; two daughters, Stacy Booker and Michelle (Moses) Edwards; three brothers, Benny Carl (Gloria) Embry, Raymond (Joann) Evans, and Bennett Evans; two sisters, Debbie Davis and Wendi Cunningham; four grandchildren, Tarencia (Reginald) Burrell, Jakima (Reese) Young, Sr., Jaquezz (Jackie) Brown, and Joshua (Jessica) Brown; great-grandchildren, Rylei, Raylei, DJ, Muffin, Toniah, Arianna, Adonis, Ahja, Aliya, and Kaylani; brother-in-law, George McCain, sisters-in-law, Earnestine Mixon, Mary McCain, Mary Hill, Leslie (Willie) Williamson, and Wanda (Nathan) Wade; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and special friends to forever cherish her memory. In this time of sorrow, let us remember Bettye with reverence and gratitude for the profound impact she had on our lives. May her spirit continue to inspire us as we carry her memory in our hearts forever.
