It is with deep sorrow, yet intense gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we mourn the loss of Mrs. Rita Underwood Dark, who gracefully left this world on August 2, 2026 while in the care of UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama surrounded by the love of her family. Born on October 14, 1965, in Talladega, Alabama, she was the cherished daughter of Johnny Jenkins and Lola Underwood. Rita's life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and devotion-an exuberant spirit who embraced every moment with joy. Rita's faith journey began at an early age when she accepted Christ and united with Parker Memorial Baptist Church, eventually becoming a member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church. A proud graduate of Munford High School, she navigated various employment paths, ultimately dedicating her heart and hands to the noble work of a Certified Nursing Assistant in the healthcare industry. Known as the life of the party, Rita brought warmth, humor, and a vibrant energy that could light up any room. Her love for her family, and especially her grandchildren, knew no bounds. Rita took great delight in family gatherings, where she served as the beloved matriarch, crafting gourmet meals and sweet treats that united her loved ones in laughter and heartfelt memories. In quieter moments, she found joy in word searches and puzzles, escaping into the soothing comfort of her favorite stories while babysitting the precious children who adored her. Rita now rests in the embrace of her heavenly family, reunited with her beloved parents, Lola Underwood and Johnny Jenkins, as well as her brothers Tim and Leslie Underwood. Her spirit will forever shine brightly in the hearts of those she leaves behind: her devoted husband, Otis Dark; her beloved son, Kendal (Aquarius Winston) Underwood; her cherished daughter, LaShonda (Denzel Ervin) Underwood; her adored grandchildren, La'Ken and Akhia Underwood; her supportive brothers, John Underwood and Jermaine (Whitney) Jenkins; her caring sisters, Rose (Norris) Sistrunk, Dorothy Kirksey, Amy Underwood, Michelle Jenkins, and Johnnie Gail Jenkins; her treasured aunt, Mary Frances (Tommy) Russell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom will miss her dearly. As we reflect on Rita's life, let us rejoice in the memories and love she shared, carrying her legacy forward in our hearts. She taught us the beauty of life's moments and the importance of family-a testament to a remarkable woman who will forever be cherished.
