Bernice Garrett

It is with heavy hearts but joyful memories that we mourn the passing of Mrs. Bernice Cook Garrett, who answered her Master's call on April 25, 2026, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her beloved family. Born on August 18, 1954, in Talladega, Alabama, she was the cherished daughter of John D. Garrett and Ollie Burton Cook and a proud member of a large family of twelve siblings. Mrs. Garrett accepted Christ at a young age and became a dedicated member of New Maryland Baptist Church, where she worshipped and served with steadfast faith until health challenges arose. An alumna of the Talladega County School System and a proud graduate of Winterboro High School, she embarked on a successful career in the poultry industry, dedicating over 31 years to Springvalley, Goldkist, and Tyson before retiring in 2010. During her journey through life, Bernice met her soulmate, Gordon Garrett, Sr. Together, they shared countless memories and the joy of raising their two beloved children, who were the bright lights of her life. Bernice found immense joy in adorning herself beautifully and lavishing her grandchildren with love and affection. Her passions included watching her favorite television shows, (especially soap operas), reading the Bible, and solving crossword puzzles. Earlier in her life, with her melodious voice, she sang with her brother in the Traveling Stars gospel group, a testament to her vibrant spirit. Bernice is now reunited in eternal peace with her parents, John D. and Ollie Cook, her husband, Gordon Garrett, Jr., her beloved daughter, Lisa Garrett, and her siblings, George Cook, Albert Cook, Frank Cook, John D. Cook, William L. Cook, John Louis Cook, Bobby Cook, Ola Mae Perkins, Martha Jean Ragland, and Annie Swain. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her devoted children, Gordon (Sheneika Davis) Garrett, Jr. and Bernice Garrett; her treasured grandchildren, Amaya Mitchell, Myka Mitchell, Kristen Buckner, Christopher Borden, and Alexis Garrett; great-grandchildren Qari Borden and Miamor Buckner; brother, Ollice "Neg" Cook; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever hold her memory in their hearts. In this time of remembrance, we trust that the love Bernice shared and the joy she brought into our lives will continue to inspire each of us. May her memory shine brightly within us as we carry her love into the world. Rest in heavenly peace, dear Bernice.
