Willie Ray Cordell

Willie Ray Cordell was born on January 5, 1950, in Nash County, North Carolina, to his loving parents, Willie and Odell Cordell. Early on, Willie's parents moved their family to Rocky Mount, North Carolina where he grew up and attended Northern Nash High School after which he enlisted in the United States Army. He served his country until 1972. He also started his spiritual journey as a young man when he united with the Apostolic Faith Church in Rocky Mount. He was deeply devoted to his faith and served the Lord faithfully throughout his life. In November 1976, Willie met his soulmate and the love of his life, Vanessa Madden. The two became one when they united in Holy Matrimony in 1977. This union was blessed with four beautiful children: Varayna Elizabeth Cordell, Christopher Cordell, Collin Ray Cordell, and Cameron Matthias Cordell. In 1978, they relocated to Vanessa's hometown, Anniston, Alabama where he had a successful career as a fireman at the Anniston Army Depot. After moving is family to Douglasville, Georgia, Willie remained employed at the Depot until he retired. Willie, a loving and supportive husband, father, and grandfather, was a man of many passions. He found great joy in camping under the stars, fishing by the serene waters and nurturing his garden. His most treasured time was spent playing with his grandchildren. A quiet man with a heart of gold, Willie was known for his infectious sense of humor and his ability to bring joy to those around him. Whether he was sharing a hearty laugh or singing his favorite song, his warmth and kindness touched the lives of many. On Sunday, February 16, 2025, while under the care of Emory University Hospital, Willie Ray Cordell answered the Master's call and entered eternal rest. While our hearts ache due to Willie's earthly absence, we find comfort in knowing he is present with the Lord. Let us carry his laughter with us and remember the gentle man who showed us all the joy of life.
