Tommie Hawkins

Tommie Lee "Bookie" Hawkins was born March 31, 1953 to the late Henry and Annie Marie Sawyer Hawkins in Talladega, Alabama. At an early age, Tommie received Christ and united with Africa Missionary Baptist Church. He was educated in the Talladega School System and attended R.R. Moton High School. After 42 years of hard work and labor, Tommie retired from the construction industry as a cement finisher to enjoy and spend more quality time with his family. While traveling through this journey called life, Tommie met his soulmate and the love of his life, the former Ms. Gwendolyn Mitchell. The two became one as they were united in Holy Matrimony and were blessed with a marriage of over 31 years. Tommie and his wife, Gwendolyn affectionately became known to each other, family, and friends as "Bookie #1 and Bookie #2". He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and if you earned his friendship, you had a friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family, but his wife was his "Bookie!! He loved his family beyond measures, and he is already missed by his family, friends, and all the lives he has touched throughout his 70-year earthly journey. If you knew Tommie, you know he was a well-known a big trash talker with a heart of gold. He never met a stranger, and he was definitely "ONE TO KNOW". Tommie was a free spirit at heart, very kind, and generous man who enjoyed life at its fullest. Telling jokes, giving parties,(where he was always the life of the party) and entertaining is the full description of how Tommie in his spare time, but during football season, he was not going to let you disturb him and the Alabama Roll Tide football game!! He was a true Alabama fan... Tommie transitioned from this life of labor to a peaceful rest on the evening of April 20, 2023 while in the comfort of his home surrounded by loved ones. He is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Annie Hawkins, sister, Josie Hawkins, and brother, Willie Hawkins. He leaves his loving memories to be forever cherished by his loving and devoted wife of 31 years, Gwendolyn "Bookie" Hawkins; three sons, Tommie (Kiria) Hawkins, Jr., Shaun Stamps, and Corey (Jenny) Mitchell; one daughter, Teress (Terry) Truss; one brother, Billy Wayne Hawkins; two sisters, Henrietta Hawkins Smith and Ruthie Estelle Brown; sister-in-laws, LaRuth Hoke of Decatur, GA, Cassandra (Willie) Tory of Lithonia, GA, Lisa (Iriv) Mitchell of Atlanta, GA, and Elizabeth Barclay of Talladega, AL; brother-in-law, Timothy (Portia) Mitchell of Decatur, GA; seventeen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
