Mittie Garrett

Mittie McClurkin Garrett, daughter of the late General Taylor McClurkin, Sr. and Edna Lane McClurkin was born September 28, 1942, in Talladega, Alabama. Mrs. Garrett accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and became a loyal and active member of the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church where she received recognition for being the Sunday School Hymn Leader. Mrs. Garrett received her education in the Talladega County School system and soon after, she began her adult life as a domestic engineer. Mrs. Garrett was loved by all and was a loving mother to many. She enjoyed spending time with her immediate and extended family. When she was not enjoying a good conversation on the phone with her friends, you could sometimes find her having a little fun playing the slots at Wind Creek Casino. Mrs. Garrett carried a sweet spirit, loved to laugh, and always brought joy to others around her. She was well known by her family, friends and community and will always be remembered for her kindness, and fun-loving spirit. Mrs. Garrett completed her journey of exuberant life and selfless love on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, as she peacefully fell asleep and answered her Master's call while under the care of Brookwood Citizens Baptist Medical Center in Talladega, Alabama. She was met at the pearly gates and welcomed home by her husband, Lee Otis Lawson, Sr., three sons, James Bradford, Jr., Michael Weatherspoon, and Jerome Lawson; six daughters, Joyce Mitchell, Quinzella Twyman, Priscilla Lawson, Denise Lawson, Maretta Wilson, and Terri Ann Wilson; parents, General Taylor McClurkin, Sr. and Edna Lane McClurkin; three brothers, General Taylor McClurkin, Jr., Len McClurkin, and Hosie McClurkin; four sisters, Lora Jackson, Lena Moten, Edna Carter, and Rannie Jordan. Mrs. Garrett leaves behind a legacy of love and memories to be cherished by her five sons, Frederick Weatherspoon of Talladega, Alabama, Tensey (Sallie) Lawson of New York, Lee Otis (Mary) Lawson, Jr. of Talladega, Alabama, Bruce Wilson of Talladega, Alabama, and Juan (Gloria) Wilson of Talladega, Alabama; five daughters, Teresa Garrett of Alpine, Alabama, Melvin Ann Kelly of Alpine, Alabama, Ollie Pearl (David) Wells of Alpine, Alabama, Brenda (John) Calhoun of Alpine, Alabama, and Janet (Michael) Zampelli of Lincoln, Alabama; special grandchild, Shanna Weatherspoon; special niece, Angie (Richard) Williams; twenty-five grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
