Lillian Marie Higgins

Lillian Marie Higgins, beloved mother, esteemed bus driver, sister, aunt, cousin, and cherished member of the Talladega community, was born on August 23, 1960, in Talladega, AL, to her late parents, William L. Springer and Ethelrene Groce Springer, and was the epitome of grace, strength, and kindness throughout her life. Lillian's love for her community was evident through her dedication and service to the local churches. At a young age she accepted Christ while attending Bellview Missionary Baptist Church and later continue spreading the word of God while worshipping with Bethel Baptist Church. At the time of her passing, she was a devoted member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Anniston, Alabama, where she faithfully attended Bible Study and Sunday School until her health began to decline. Lillian's solid faith and commitment to her spiritual family will forever be remembered. Affectionately known as the "Candy Lady," Lillian brought joy and smiles to countless faces through her sweet offerings. She had a passionate love for preaching, gospel music, clothes, shoes, and shopping, always adorned in stylish ensembles. Lillian found solace in sitting on her porch, working on crossword puzzles on her phone, and indulging in a game of solitaire. Her love for her grandchildren knew no bounds and their time spent together held immeasurable value. Lillian's leisurely afternoons were often spent curled up on the couch, captivated by TV Land channel classics, particularly "Sanford and Son" and "The Andy Griffith Show." She had an infectious laughter that filled the room and a compassionate heart that knew no bounds. Lillian's unwavering dedication to her work as a bus driver in the transportation industry was truly remarkable. For over 25 years, she safely transported countless individuals, touching the lives of students, colleagues, and community members with her infectious smile, warm heart, and professional attire. Her genuine care for others made her a beloved figure among her peers and passengers alike. Growing up in Talladega, Lillian developed a strong sense of community and family. She instilled these values in her own family, prioritizing love, support, and unity with her two sons, Schuylar and Matthew. Together, they will carry forward Lillian's legacy, forever cherishing the memories of her unwavering love and guidance. Lillian had a heart of gold and would feed you, share with you, but most of all, she was well-known for being a great listener and would always give you solid advice. Lillian's natural charisma and vibrant spirit were evident in all aspects of her life. She had an unwavering passion for life and seized every opportunity to cultivate joy and laughter. Whether she was spending time with family and friends, exploring the outdoors, or enjoying the simple pleasures in life, Lillian radiated an undeniable zest for living. A woman of impeccable strength and determination, Lillian overcame various challenges throughout her lifetime. Her resilience and perseverance serve as a source of inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Lillian's exceptional spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her dearly. On Wednesday, September 27, 2023, after sixty-three blessed earthly years, God called for his servant, Mrs. Lillian Marie Dates Higgins to take her rest as she transitioned to her eternal home while surrounded by her love ones. Once reaching those pearly gates, she was reunited with her parents, William L. and Ethelrene Springer, brothers, James Manuel, Lonnell Manuel, Donnell Manuel, and Willie Joe Springer, two bonus children, Cheryl Watson and Billy Joe Garrett. Mrs. Higgins leaves to cherish her precious memories, two loving sons, Schuylar (LaToya) Dates and Matthew Dates, II; three bonus daughters, Tonette (Vince) Garrett, Amanda Jordan, and Angela Dates; three bonus sons, Tavares Dates, Adrian (Rhonda) Hall, and Lacory (Tina) Dates; three brothers, Otis (Evelyn) Manuel, Jr. of New York, Rev. Dr. Billy G. (Rhonda) Springer and Clarence Springer of Talladega; one sister, Linda (Matthew) Ivey of San Antonio, Texas; special friend, Tenisha Richardson; special cousin, Patricia Ellen Higgins; two aunts, Mary Hall and Annie Pearl Swain; twenty-nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Lillian Marie Dates Higgins was a beacon of light in our community, leaving a profound impact on all who were fortunate enough to have known her. Her unwavering spirit, love, and dedication will forever be cherished and celebrated. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
