Darry Elston

Deacon Darry Thomas "Duck" Elston was born on February 12, 1962, in Lincoln, Alabama, to the loving union of Calvin Elston and Juanita Fomby Elston. Darry was nurtured not only by his biological parents, but also by two loving people he was proud to call his parents, Fred and Evelyn Embry. Their guidance and love shaped him into the extraordinary man and father he became. At an early age, Darry accepted Christ and united with Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He later worshipped with Holy Hill Church of God, and at the time of his passing, he was a faithful member of St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, where he continued his walk of faith. He spent many years displaying his remarkable work ethic and dedication as a mechanic at the Anniston Army Depot before retiring to continue pursuing his passion for coaching and embrace life's simple joys. Affectionately known as "Duck," Darry was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, brother, mentor, coach, and friend. His life was marked by his steadfast love for his family, his church, and the Lincoln community. Darry was an avid sports enthusiast and a proud, diehard Florida State Seminoles fan. Football season was one of his favorite times of the year, and he never missed an opportunity to cheer on his beloved Seminoles. His greatest passion, however, was supporting the Lincoln High School Golden Bears. Darry devoted more than 27 years as a volunteer football coach with the Lincoln High School Athletic Department. Serving as a dedicated offensive and defensive line assistant, faithful Booster Club member, mentor, and encourager, he poured countless hours into helping shape the lives of young athletes both on and off the field. His commitment, leadership, and love for the Golden Bears earned him the admiration and respect of generations of players, coaches, parents, and fans. He will forever be remembered as a true Golden Bear. Away from the football field, Darry found peace in spending time fishing. Whether casting a line on a quiet afternoon or enjoying fellowship with family and friends, these moments brought him great happiness. His life was a beautiful example of dedication, generosity, and service. He leaves behind a legacy of love, mentorship, and community that will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him. On Friday, July 24, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family in the comfort of his home, Mr. Darry Thomas Elston peacefully answered God's call from labor to eternal rest. As he entered through Heaven's pearly gates, he was joyfully welcomed by those who had gone before him: his beloved parents, Calvin and Juanita Elston and Fred and Evelyn Embry, his brother, Perry Elston; and his sisters, Juakia Marshall and Tawanda (Dwight) Madden. Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice in knowing that he now rests safely in the arms of his Savior. Darry leaves to cherish his precious memories his devoted wife of many years, Vanessa Green Elston; two sons, Brian Green and Vontavis Knight; two daughters, Rhonda (Willie) Buckhanon and Taneshia Knight; two sisters, Mertha Pearson and Renee (Roger) Jordan; two brothers, Stephen (Wanda) Beavers and Clarence (Betty) Embry; his special sons, Carwarren (Tasha) Pearson, Damian Madden, and Jerion Marshall; special nieces, Darcille Embry and Miketa (Iesha) Barclay; five sisters-in-law, Clara Elston, Dorine (Author ) Smith, Tammy Green, Erica Green, and Melinda Green; and two brothers-in-law, Larry Green and Laddy (Connie) Green. Fun-loving memories will also remain in the hearts of his beloved grandchildren: Chantal (Angelo) Woods, Patrick Weed, Jr., Justin Knight, Jelissa Knight, and Messiah Green; eight great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, former players, dear friends, and all whose lives were touched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering support. A devoted man of faith, a faithful husband, a loving father and grandfather, an extraordinary coach, and a loyal friend, Darry's impact reached far beyond the football field. His encouraging words, generous heart, infectious smile, and steadfast dedication to his family and community will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. His race has been run. His victory has been won. His legacy will live on forever.
