Chante Chatman

On March 8, 1976, in Anniston, Alabama, Henry and Flossie Young Chatman celebrated the birth of their daughter, Chante' Latrice-a name meaning "To Sing," reflecting her enduring passion for the performing arts. In her early years, Chante' embraced her Christian faith at Sweet Rock Pure Holiness Church, where she sang joyfully in the choir and penned transformative plays that celebrated the essence of her spiritual journey. She was a true servant of God, tirelessly working in His vineyard as she spread her wings of faith across various churches throughout Alabama. Chante' unwavering devotion to her faith was a beacon of hope and inspiration to many, exemplifying the joy that comes from living a life fulfilled by purpose. Chante' journey was illuminated by her passion for education and her commitment to nurturing young minds. She earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Alabama A&M University. It was at A&M where she met her Bu Phi Sisters. Chante' became a devoted educator whose dedication to her students was unparalleled. She inspired countless young minds, nurturing them with love and compassion. Her thirst for knowledge propelled her to pursue an Education Specialist degree at Argosy University. Chante' began her teaching career within the Anniston City Schools, where she made her mark at Golden Springs Elementary School. In addition, Chante' taught at Lynn Fanning Elementary in Huntsville, Talladega County Central High School, Lincoln Elementary School, and Lincoln High School. Being the educator she was, Chante' also served as Lead Teacher at Oxcel Academy and Reading Interventionist at Oxford High School, where she passionately inspired her students and left a profound impact on their lives. She actively participated in the Continuous Improvement Plan Committee and enjoyed many joyous moments with her colleagues, affectionately referred to as "The O Squad." Chante' Latrice Chatman was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Iota Mu Omega since the Spring of 2006, where there were 37 Line Sisters and she was #33, known as "Giggles". Her commitment to her sorority was recognized through her receipt of the Member Chairman Award and the Best of the Best Award. These were milestones that highlighted her passion and hard work in the sorority. Chante' played a significant role in her sorority through various leadership positions, including Second Anti-Basileus (4 years), Ivy Leaf Reporter, Membership Chairman, Chairman of the Arts Committee (Target Four), Chairman of Strengthening our Sisterhood Sisterly Relations, and Chairman of EYL (Emerging Young Leaders). Always an active and contributing member of her sorority, Chante' was also proud to be a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Southeastern Regional Conference Choir, and the Calhoun National Pan-Hellenic Council Choir (NPHCC) where her passion for music and sisterhood flourished. She was not just a member; she was a spirit of joy and creativity who inspired others through her work, as well as her impactful contributions to the arts. Her spirit shone in both her career and community. She was known as a dedicated supporter of the Oxford High School 2026 State Championship History Makers, always cheering them on. In addition, Chante's passion extended to her beloved Auburn Tigers. Chante' was also noted for her participation in the Order of Eastern Star Slaughter Delight 782 since 2024, embracing a life of service and sisterhood. Chante' found beauty and meaning in the spirit of Easter, celebrating the life, death, and resurrection as a testament to hope and renewal. This reverence for life guided her in her personal beliefs, illuminating her path through both challenges and triumphs. With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we are deeply saddened at the loss of our beloved Chante' Latrice Chatman, who departed this world on March 10, 2026, at the age of 50. Chante's journey on this earth has now led her to be reunited with her father, Henry Chatman; her brother, Hirman Gregory Chatman; her grandparents, M.C. and Everlena Chatman and Fred and Willie Estelle Young, Sr.; her maternal aunt and uncles, Ida P. Romine, Larry Young, Horace Young, and Randy Young; her paternal aunts, Mary McCloud and Sarah Bagley. Chante' held a special place in her heart for her beloved nephew, the late Rodney Tavaris Oden. The bond they shared was immeasurable, and his memory remained a cherished tapestry woven into the fabric of her life. Although her heart was forever changed with his passing, she kept his spirit alive through the stories she shared and the love she gave. In their loving embrace, she finds eternal rest. Chante' leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration, and steadfast dedication to her family, friends, and students. The bond of family was the fabric of Chante's life, and she held each of her loved ones close to her heart. She will be lovingly remembered by her cherished and devoted mother, Flossie Chatman; three beloved sisters, Angela (Rodney) Oden, Kimberly Chatman, and Candace Chatman Pope; brother, Dexter (Renee) Chatman; her dear "DAUNTIE", bonus sister, and traveling partner, Anita Suttle, and aunts Elizabeth (William) Turner, Louella Lewis, Evelena (Warren) Gooden, Annie Mae Chatman, Linda Faye Dial , Sharon Young and Cathy Young Elston; a special uncle, who was more like a dad and known as "THE BEST UNCLE IN THE WORLD", Melvin (Shirley) Chatman, and uncles Pastor Fred (Clemmie) Young, and Douglas (Charmonique) Young; nieces and nephews, Erica (Frankie) Hearn, Marishia Chatman, Denzel Chatman, Shaleia Chatman, Zakasia (Tyler) Chatman Johnson, Kaydence Pope, Donnie Jones, Jasmine Jones Chatman, Shanequa Chatman, and Halie Chatman; along with a wealth of students, colleagues, and friends that will forever hold her close to their hearts. Chante's legacy extends beyond family; her dear friend, steadfast confidant, and little bonus brother, Darius Pearson, who was also the loving son and brother to the family, played a vital role in her life, providing support and love throughout the years. His solid presence was indeed the glue that kept her spirit vibrant and lively. As we reflect on Chante's life, let us celebrate a life well-lived, a life that touched many, igniting passion, hope, and love. Her spirit will forever shine in the hearts of those she leaves behind, reminding us of the joy she brought to the world. In her honor, may we carry forward her legacy of kindness, wisdom, and compassion. We rejoice in the life she shared with us, for Chante' was truly a gift to all she encountered.
