Bettye Swain

Bettye Jean Swain was born on March 20, 1943 and was blessed to have parents, Amos and Lizzie Swain and Cecil and Ruby Twyman. At a young age, Bettye confessed Christ and united with New Maryland Missionary Baptist Church. She received her education in the Talladega County School system and was a graduate of Phyllis Wheatley High School in Childersburg, Alabama. Upon completing high school, Bettye decided to further her education by attending Gadsden State College where she received her associates degree in business. Bettye later migrated to Buffalo, New York to continue her education and for better job opportunities. She enrolled at Buffalo State University and received her BS degree in Social Work. Bettye worked as a social worker for many years and retired from Transitional Services of New York. After migrating to Buffalo, Bettye remained a faithful servant of the Lord and continued working in his vineyard when she joined Jordan Grove Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Glenn Dubois. She had a talent for singing and was not only a member of the choir, but Bettye would visit various churches in the Buffalo area singing solo and praising the Lord. After residing in Buffalo for 42 years, Bettye returned home when her health failed. She united with Kingston Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Byron White and remained an active member of the church and Sunday School until her health no longer permitted her to do so. She was a member of the Cheerful Givers Society #5. Bettye was a very kind-hearted and loving mother to her only son, Deric. She was a mother to nieces, nephews, grands, cousins, and friends. Her hospitality went beyond measures when it came to helping others. Bettye loved shopping and going out to dinner for a nice meal; but you could not interfere with her relation time while watching "The View" and "America's Got Talent" with her son. Over the years, she did her share of traveling and enjoying her life. On Wednesday, September 28, 2022 while under the care of Brookwood Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, God saw Bettye was getting tired and said take your rest. She was preceded in death by her parents, Amos Sr. and Lizzie J. Swain and Cecil and Ruby Twyman and her sister, Linda Goggins. Left to cherish Bettye's memories are her son, Deric (Sonya) Swain, Sr., grandchildren, Danielle Swain and Deric Swain, Jr.of Concord, NC; brothers, Amos Swain, Jr, Ronald (LaShawn) Swain, of Alpine, AL, Sanford (Angela) Swain, of Talladega, AL, and David (Kathleen) Twyman, of Chicago, IL; sisters, Lizzie (Rev. Arthur) Swain, Mary Alice McKinney of Alpine, AL and Catherine Turner of California; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
