Barbara Jean Montgomery

Barbara Jean Montgomery, a beloved mother, grandmother, educator, musician, and friend, transitioned peacefully from this life on January 22, 2025 at the age of 81. Born on July 1, 1943, to Ms. Ritta Robinson and Nathaniel Beavers in Ragland, AL, Barbara lived a life filled with love, purpose, and service to others. Barbara was married to L.C. Gover, Jr., and together they built a loving family, raising two children: Marcus (Jessie) Gover and Lenieka (Raymond) Portis. She was the proud and doting grandmother of six grandchildren: Leniya Gover, Marcus Cordell Gover, Alliyah Gover, Raymond Chase Portis, Reagan Portis, and Raylan Portis. After her marriage to L.C. Gover, Jr., Barbara later found love again with Oliver (Jack) Montgomery, whom she cherished until his passing. A woman of deep faith, Barbara accepted Christ at an early age and lived a life guided by her spiritual beliefs. She graduated high school in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and pursued higher education with determination. She earned her bachelor's degree from Tuskegee University and later obtained a Master's in Education from Alabama State University. Barbara's passion for teaching and education spanned an extraordinary 62 years, impacting the lives of multiple generations of students and faculty. Her dedication and love for her students left an indelible mark on countless lives, and her legacy as an educator will be remembered for years to come. In addition to her career in education, Barbara was a gifted musician who found joy in playing the piano. She shared her talent as a church musician at Morning Star Baptist Church in Ragland, where she faithfully served for many years. Barbara's life was enriched by the love and support of a host of friends, coworkers, and former students-too many to count. She also shared a special bond with her dear and longtime friend, Freddie Hudson, whose companionship brought her great joy. Barbara leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service. Her gentle spirit, dedication to her family, and unwavering commitment to her community will be deeply missed but forever cherished.
